Shakaland Zulu Cultural Experience
The Shakaland experience is unique and will offer you the opportunity to experience both contemporary and traditional Zulu culture within one environment.
You will be given a guided tour of the village discussing various aspects of Zulu life including the following:
• building structures and home stead’s
• Traditional attire
• Zulu Beer or Umqonbothi.
• Cattle and their value within Zulu culture
• Arts and crafts including both clay and grass works that are functional items.
• Foods and their storage facilities
• Zulu warfare under King Shaka
You will have the opportunity to watch some audio visual material covering important parts of Zulu culture and history as well as to pay visit to a Sangoma or an Inyanga if you feel you are up to it.
A sangoma is a spiritual healer who posses the ability to look into your future and usually helps with psychosocial issues, where as an Inyanga is a herbalist with magical healing powers and the ability to cast spells much like a witch.
Both Inyangas and Sangomas are still consulted today on a regular basis, with these professions now being taught at Universities. These professions are both recognized by the South African Medical Council as medical practitioners, following the same registration and legal procedures as western doctors.
Both these trips follow the same pattern, just one is around lunch and the other around an evening meal. The trip starts at St. Lucia and takes you through to Shakaland, where you will be given a guided tour of the village, be given the opportunity to visit their well stocked curio shop, Pay a visit to a Sangoma or an Inyanga, then experience some real contemporary Zulu Culture in the form of a musical show .
This Musical show will lift your spirits and allow you to experience the thrill of serious drumming with dancers moving to the beat in ways that you never imagined, showing great athletic skills, and stamping their feet with military precision.
The next stage of the trip is what some really enjoy, a good hearty meal with light music often supplied by live groups. The restaurant at Shakaland is really superb and the staff are always friendly with out being over bearing .
Once you have finished eating and listening to live music you may sit at the bar for a while and relax in the company of friends, before departing back to St. Lucia.
This unique trip is limited to a minimum of 4 persons and a maximum of 10.
The lunch time experience will depart from St. Lucia at around 09 h 00 and be back at about 16 H 30.
The evening trip will depart from St. Lucia at about 14 H 00 and be back at around 23 H 00
